Free textured crochet washcloth pattern

I love giving crocheted gifts, but there is not much out there for guys other than scarves and more scarves, beanies and gloves. Living in a warm country, all that winter gear is not that useful! I’ve been wracking my brain for something a little different, but that is also easy to make.

My husband does lots of DIY and often spends a Saturday in his workshop or in the garden. It drives me nuts when he comes in and wipes his hands on my lovely white hand-towels, so I decided to make him a manly washcloth that he can use when he’s all mucky. And the free textured crochet washcloth pattern was born!

I’ve really enjoyed playing around with some new variations on basic stitches. It’s amazing how just one small tweak can change the look of a stitch completely. This pattern uses a simple hdc stitch (if you don’t know how to do that, have a look at this tutorial) and works into the front and back loops to give a lovely textured, almost ribbed effect. It’s an excellent pattern if you are a beginner and it works up very quickly.

For this free textured crochet washcloth pattern, I used Elle Cotton On Double Knit (100% cotton) in this lovely mottled blue. It’s hard-wearing and absorbent.

Requirements:

Double knit cotton (Elle Cotton On)

3.75 mm (F) crochet hook

Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Method

Ch 36

R1. Skip 1, sc in each (35)

R2. Ch 2, *hdc in the back loop, hdc in the front loop. Repeat from * to end, hdc in ch sp at end of row.

Repeat until the desired size is reached. I did 11 rows for a washcloth.

To add a loop on one of the corners, ch 7 and sl st into the first ch to form a loop.
