Embroidered crochet heart | Free crochet pattern

I really enjoy combining different crafting skills and so for this project, I used some stitchwork to make an embroidered crochet heart. This little heart would make a lovely keepsake for that special someone this Valentines day. It would also be lovely hung up on an Easter tree!

Embroidery onto crochet can be a little fiddly, but once you get the placement right, the end results are lovely!

I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK for my embroidered crochet heart, but any yarn will work. If you need some help with the embroidery stitches, then head over to my YouTube channel for tutorials.

Embroidered crochet heart pattern

Materials

C2.75 mm crochet hook
Yarn needle
Embroidery needle
Stuffing

*DK (light worsted) cotton yarn in the following colors
Cream (Paintbox Yarn light champagne)
Pink (Paintbox Yarn Blush Pink)
White (Paintbox Yarn Paper White)
Green (Paintbox Yarn Lime Green)

*Paintbox Yarn Cotton DK: 100% cotton, 50 g (1.7 oz) / 125 (137 yd)

Notes

• Finished size: 7cm tall

Special Stitches

sc3tog: this decrease is worked over 3 stitches rather than 2. Insert hook into first st, yo and pull up loop, insert hook into next st, yo and pull up loop, insert hook into 3rd st, yo and pull up loop. Yo and pull through all loops on hook.

French knot: Insert your needle from back to front and pull thread through. Insert needle under the working thread, then loop the working thread over the needle to form a figure of eight. Tighten the knot on the needle. Insert the needle back into the fabric (not in the same hole) and carefully pull the thread through to tighten the knot.

Lazy daisy stitch: Insert your needle from back to front and pull thread through. Insert needle back into the hole you have just come through and pull the yarn to the back, leaving a small loop. Do not pull your thread all the way through! This loop is your first petal / chain. To secure the chain in place, insert your needle from the back of the work, just below the tip of the petal (opposite side to the first hole). Pull thread through and tack down the tip of the petal.

Panel 1

R1: ch 2, 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, turn (2)
R2: sc, 2 sc in next st, ch 1, turn (3)
R3: sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, ch 1, turn (4)
R4: sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, ch 1, turn (5)
R5: sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st, ch 1, turn (6)
R6: sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st, ch 1, turn (7)
R7: sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st, ch 1, turn (8)
R8: sc in next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st, ch 1, turn (9)
R9: sc in next 8 sts, 2 sc in next st, ch 1, turn (10)
R10: sc in next 9 sts, 2 sc in next st, ch 1, turn (11)
R11: sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in next st, ch 1, turn (12)

Now add the first bump of the heart. Note that you only work half way across the row!

R12: sc in next 6 st, ch 1, turn (6)
R13: sc2tog, sc in next 4 st, ch 1, turn (5)
R14: sc2tog, sc in next 3 st, ch 1, turn (4)
R15: sc2tog, sc in next 2 st, ch 1, turn (3)
R16: sc3tog, fasten off and cut yarn.

Add the 2nd bump. Join yarn in the middle of the heart, with the 1st bump on the right.

R17: sc in next 6 st. ch 1, turn (6)
R18: sc2tog, sc in next 4 st, ch 1, turn (5)
R19: sc2tog, sc in next 3 st, ch 1, turn (4)
R20: sc2tog, sc in next 2 st, ch 1, turn (3)
R21: sc3tog, fasten off and cut yarn.

Weave in ends. Make a 2nd heart.

Assembly and details

• Embroider or cross stitch your design onto one of the heart panels (pattern included in low cost PDF version)
  
• Hold two heart shaped panels together, wrong sides facing, with the decorated side facing you. Join yarn in the centre of the heart and work 5 sc to the top of the left bump.
  
• Work 3 sc into the same st (at the top of the bump), work 2 sc into the next st, work 15 sc evenly down the left side of the heart.
  
• Into the point at the bottom of the heart work (sc + ch 1 + sc)
  
• Work 10 sc up the right hand side of the heart. Stuff!
  
• Work another 5 sc evenly towards the top of the heart
  
• Stuff again if needed
  
• Work 2 sc into the next st, work 3 sc into the top of the heart
  
• Last chance to add stuffing
  
• Work 5 sc down to the centre of the heart. Fasten off and weave in ends.
