For this crochet Christmas wreath ornament I used both basic embroidery and crochet to create a unique decoration that I can’t wait to hang on the tree.
These little ornaments work up surprisingly quickly and would also look lovely tied onto a gift or strung up over the fireplace.
While this little crochet Christmas wreath ornament looks tricky to make, I promise you that it is not. You will, however, need to know how to make a basic embroidered knot (such a French knot or colonial knot). Please watch my video tutorial for tips on how to embroider a knot onto crochet.
Crochet Christmas wreath ornament requirements
DK/light worsted yarn in a neutral color such as cream or beige. I used African Expressions Joy*
Stranded embroidery cotton in the following colors:
Light green
Medium green
Dark green
Red
Crochet hook (I used a 4mm crochet hook, but use the hook best suited to the yarn that you have)
Gold ribbon (optional)
Sewing/emroidery needle (one with a sharp point is preferable!)
Other embellishments (eg. beads, ribbon, bells – optional)
*African Expressions Joy: 50g (1.75oz), 100m (109yds), 15% mohair, 40% wool, 45% acrylic
Notes:
- I highly recommend using yarn that is either acrylic or wool (or a blend) for the base circle. The “fuzz” (also known as a halo) of acrylic/wool is much more forgiving than cotton and is also easier to stitch onto than cotton.

Crochet Christmas wreath ornament pattern
The crochet circle base for this ornament is worked in continuous rounds. Do not slip stitch at the end of each round as this creates a visible ridge which we don’t want showing on the ornament.
Make 2 circles as follows:
Rnd 1: into a mr, work 6 sc (6)
Rnd 2: 2 sc in each st around (12)
Rnd 3: [sc in next st, 2 st in next] repeat around (18)
Rnd 4: [sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next] repeat around (24)
Rnd 5: [2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 st] repeat around (30)
Rnd 6: [sc in next 4 st, 2 sc in next st] repeat around (36)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Embroider the Christmas wreath
Now to work the embroidery knots onto one of the bases. I used 3 strands of thread for my knots, but you can easily use more strands for bigger knots and fewer strands for smaller knots. A mix of sizes also can look really lovely.
Work the knots roughly between rnd 3 and 5. Remember that the base circle is worked in a continuous round though (a spiral), so make sure to keep the wreath in the middle of the base circle.
Start by using the medium green to make knots and lay out the rough shape of the wreath. Then go back and fill in some of the gaps. Try to be random with the placement of the knots (don’t overthink it!) for a more natural look.
And don’t worry, the wreath will look horrible when you start! Just keep going.
Once the basic shape of the wreath is complete, use the light and dark green thread to fill in any more gaps. Using the three different colors gives dimension to your crochet Christmas wreath ornament.
Finally add in a few knots in red for holly berries.
Assembly
- Weave in any remaining ends.
- Place the two base circles wrong sides together.
- Join yarn anywhere along the outer edge of the circle.
- Slip stitch through both circles, all the way around.
- Weave in any remaining ends.
- Add a small gold bow and any other embellishments .
- Add yarn/string/ribbon for hanging.

Tips for embroidering knots onto crochet:
- Use more strands (e.g. 4 – 6) of embroidery floss for larger knots and fewer thread (e.g. 2) for smaller knots.
- Do not be afraid to sew a knot directly into the middle of a piece of yarn. In fact, it is better to sew the knots in the shape that you want rather than in the guidelines created by the crochet
- Do not go back into the same hole when securing an embroidered knot as it will pull all the way through
