It’s nearly Granny Square Day!! I love this annual celebration of the humble granny square and decided to design a new square to add to the mix. Meet the crochet Starburst granny square. This modern crochet square design makes use of long treble crochets worked into the previous round. This gives the impression that the stitches are bursting out of the centre of the granny square.
For all the purists out there, the granny stitch (3 double crochet clusters) is used throughout the crochet starburst granny square design to give a nod to the traditional granny square.
This design can either be worked in multiple colors to give a vibrant starburst square effect. Or, for a more muted and sophisticated look, use a single colour.

Special stitches:
This pattern makes use of a treble crochet that is worked into the previous round. Make sure you do not work over the chains in the current round, but rather fold the chains of the current rounds towards the back of the work to expose the corner chains from the previous round. Insert the hook from front to back, only under the chains from the previous round.
Notes:
- This square can be worked in different colours or in a single color. If working a single color, fasten off between rnds for a neater finish.
- Use either a standing stitch or chains to start your rounds, as you prefer.
- Finished size: 9cm square using the hook and yarn suggested, after blocking.
- This square is not worked in continuous rounds. Make sure to slst or invisible join to close each round as instructed by the pattern.
- This pattern uses US terminology (see abbreviations)

Can you please indicate which are corners? I join in a corner, then is the 2dc in ch2-sp the side of the work? Then the tr is a corner again? Sorry – am confused!
So the 2 dc is into the ch-2-sp of the current round, and the trebles are worked into the corner (ch-2-sp) of the previous round. That’s what gives the square those v-shaped “streaks” at the corners. Hope that helps!
Oh I just love this! I wish there was a video tutorial for it.
It’s on my to do list!! 🙂
